London Luton Airport Limited have published their preferred option for development as part of their vision to take the airport to 32 million passengers per annum. The proposal involves the creation of a second terminal, relocating a number of the existing car parks and improvements to the hangers and taxiways.

The announcement comes as London Luton Airport continues to see increasing passenger numbers, with 16.5m people using the airport in 2018 and a cap of 18m passengers per annum under the existing consent.

To put this into context, London Luton Airport is currently the 5th busiest airport in the UK. These proposals would give London Luton Airport the capacity to overtake Manchester and Stansted, which both currently handle around 25m passengers per annum.

This announcement follows the conclusion of a three year £160m transformation program which included significant changes to the terminal, the construction of a multi storey car park, a bus terminal and a new dual carriageway access to and from the airport.

The plan shows the route of the Luton DART which is currently under construction and will provide a link between Luton Parkway Train Station and The Airport. The £200m DART project is due to be operational and open to passengers in 2021.

We recognise the significant contribution that London Luton Airport makes to the economy and the value it creates. We have seen first hand the number of companies that have chosen to relocate to Luton to be close to the airport or the number of occupiers that have established operations in Luton as a result of airport contracts. In our view anything which continues to build on this can only be positive.

The statutory consultation is expected to begin in late 2019. Further details of the proposals can be found on the LLAL Future Luton website.
